UK Premiere of the Bharat Symphony by Dr. L Subramaniam at Barbican Hall

To culminate the major events under the India-UK Year of Culture 2017, High Commission of India, Ministry of Culture, TeamWorks and Lord Mayor of London brought to London a special event. Titled Bharat Symphony, this was a celebration of 70 momentous years of India’s Independence, a new orchestral work by violin icon L. Subramaniam.

This was presented as an elegant tapestry of Indian culture in four movements, symbolizing the four major periods of Indian heritage: the Prehistoric Vedic period; the Mughal period; the British period and finally, the post-Independence modern period. Incorporating melodic chants from Rigveda, 5000 year old sacred Sanskrit texts and Hindustani instruments, the work was an elegant tapestry of Indian culture, with the fourth movement symbolising the post-independence period, tracing global influences over the last 70 years. This concerto-grosso featured the London Symphony Orchestra with Kavita Krishnamurti, one of India’s most celebrated vocalists, and an Indian ensemble.
