Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs Mr. M J Akbar at Chatham House London Conference-2017

Hon’ble Minister of State for External Affairs Mr. M J Akbar attended the Chatham House London Conference - 2017 today. Speaking at the plenary session on ‘People Vs Politics: Building and Breaking Trust', the Minister spoke of the challenges posed to governance across the world by the will and expectations of the people.

During the session, Mr. Michael Stewart, global Vice Chairman of leading global communications firm - Edelman, revealed that in its ‘Trust Barometer 2017’, it was revealed that India was the only country among the 28 surveyed that retained the confidence of its population in its governance institutions amidst trust deficit in governments worldwide. Mr. Akbar said that the finding should come as no surprise given that at the centre and heart of Government of India’s mission is the aim to improve the quality of life for its citizens each day and this has been acknowledged and received positively by Indians across all sections and regions.

Hon’ble Minister also spoke about the challenges to nation-states, primary being the threat posed by terrorism. He said that there is a disturbing trend of terrorism being used as a potent poison to disturb communal harmony in civilised societies across the world, and that there is need to restore trust of people in democratic institutions.
