The Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Scheme

The Government of India had announced vide Gazette Notification No.26011/01/2014IC.I dated 09 January 2015 that all PIO cards issued till 09 January 2015 were deemed to be OCI Cards. As such the PIO Card Scheme was withdrawn. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has specified that only machine readable travel documents would be acceptable w.e.f. October 1, 2018. The PIO cards are handwritten documents. Hence it will be necessary upon PIO Card holders to obtain machine readable OCI Cards in lieu of existing handwritten PIO cards before October 1, 2018 to avoid any inconvenience. The grace period for travel to India on the basis of PIO Card has been extended till September 30, 2018. However, PIO Card holders should perform return journey before October 1, 2018. PIO Card holders were advised, from time to time, to convert PIO Card to OCI Card. The last date for application for conversion of valid PIO card to OCI card on gratis basis was till 31st December, 2017. PIO Card holders can apply online for conversion at http://passport.gov.in/oci/ and submit passport, print of application, specified photos, documentation, fees etc at the VFS Centre (www.vfsglobal.com/India/UK).There are charges as fresh OCI applicant for conversion of PIO Card to OCI Card.
