To celebrate 60 years of the Indian Republic, the High Commission of India, London, and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi, organised a special dance performance, So Many Journeys, by the celebrated artist, Geeta Chandran and her disciples from Natyavriksha Dance Company.
Shri Nalin Surie, High Commissioner of India, London, lit the auspicious lamp and addressed a full house at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre, London. It was an amazing performance, it had elements of traditional as well as experimental numbers. Very few artists are able to traverse this trajectory, but Geeta’s skill and flair enabled her to undertake this delicate balance with unusual aplomb.
This production also toured reputed venues in the UK including Beck Theatre, Hayes, Reardon Smith Theatre, Cardiff, The International Convention Centreat Birmingham, George Square Theatre at Edinburgh, Athena Conference Hall at Leicester and St George’s Hall in Liverpool. It is based on her book by the same title, of Geeta’s writings narrating her engagement with Bharatanatyam. Geeta has been decorated with innumerable national and international awards and honours including the Indira Priyadarshini Award, The Lifetime Achievement Award and the Padmashri bestowed on her by the Government of India in 2007.
Founder-President of Natya-Vriksha, Geeta has been trained in Bharatanatyam by a galaxy of eminent Gurus. Synthesizing their knowledge with her personality, Geeta has imprinted the dance with her own unique dance persona and by expanding the classical repertoire of the dance and bringing to it new forms of musical, poetic and rhythmic richness. In her unique dance presentations Geeta skilfully weaved abstract notions of joy, beauty, values, aspirations, myth and spirituality. Geeta is also celebrated for her diverse accomplishments in the fields of television, video and film, theatre, choreography, dance education, dance activism and dance-issue journalism.
